In short

  • A meta description is the short summary shown under the title on Google. It doesn't affect rankings directly; its job is to persuade the searcher to click.
  • Aim for 140–160 characters. Put the most important information in the first 120, since mobile results can cut the text off earlier.
  • A good product description has four parts: what the product is, the feature that sets it apart, the benefit to the customer and a short call to action.
  • Write a separate description for every page, and never promise discounts, shipping or warranties the site doesn't offer.

What is a meta description?

A meta description is a one- or two-sentence summary that sits in the page's HTML in a <meta name="description"> tag. Visitors don't see it on the page, but Google often uses it for the two lines of text under the blue title in search results.

Google says plainly that it doesn't use the meta description as a ranking signal, so a better description won't move you up on its own. But it largely decides which of two results in the same position gets the click. In e-commerce, that means being chosen over competitors selling the same product.

Google doesn't always show what you wrote: if it thinks another passage on the page fits the search better, it uses that instead. A description that summarizes the page accurately is usually shown as is, especially for searches that include the product name. With no description at all, Google picks its own snippet from the page, which is often menu text, shipping information or a half-finished sentence.

How long should a meta description be?

Google doesn't publish a character limit; the text is cut according to its width on screen. In practice, a description of 140–160 characters shows in full on desktop. Mobile results can cut it off a little earlier, so putting the most important information in the first 120 characters is a safe habit.

LengthWhat happens
Under 120 charactersIt shows, but part of the space goes unused, along with a feature you could have mentioned.
140–160 charactersUsually shows in full on desktop. This is the target range.
Over 160 charactersThe end is cut off with “…”, and the call to action is usually lost.

Benefity's SEO score gives full marks to descriptions of 120–160 characters, and Benefity AI aims for 140–158, so the text shows in full without wasting space.

The four parts of a good product meta description

  1. What the product is, in the words people search with: “ceramic V60 brewing set” rather than just “V60”.
  2. The feature that sets it apart: material, size, capacity, compatibility. Only features the product really has.
  3. The benefit: what that feature does for the customer. “A 15-bar pump” is a feature; “café-quality espresso at home” is a benefit.
  4. A soft call to action: a short invitation such as “Take a look” or “Explore it today”. No shouting, no pile of exclamation marks.

Weak and strong examples

The examples below come from an imaginary coffee shop. In each one, the strong version gives concrete information that sets the product or page apart from competitors.

Weak

Espresso machines at the best prices on our site. Buy now!

Strong

Brew café-quality espresso at home with a 15-bar pump and a 1.8-liter water tank. Explore the stainless steel Pro X2 Espresso Machine today.

The weak version could belong to any store and says nothing. The strong one has two concrete features, a benefit and a soft call to action.

How it looks in Google search results

Weak

Coffee machine models, coffee machine prices and coffee machine types are here.

Strong

Espresso, drip and capsule coffee machines on one page. Compare them by capacity and brewing method, and easily pick the right one for your kitchen.

Repeating the keyword three times doesn't help a category page. The strong version says what's in the category and how to choose.

Weak

In this post you can find information about brewing coffee.

Strong

How do you brew pour-over coffee with a V60? We cover grind size, water temperature and brew time step by step, so your first cup comes out balanced.

A blog description repeats the question being searched and says what the reader will learn.

Templates for products, categories and blog posts

A template gets you past the blank page, but you still have to fill the gaps with real information so every page doesn't end up with the same sentence.

PageTemplate
Product[Product type and name] + [1–2 distinguishing features] + [benefit] + [short call to action]
Category[Category name] + [what's in it] + [how to choose] + [short call to action]
Blog post[The question being searched] + [what the post covers] + [what the reader gets out of it]

Common mistakes

  • Copying the same description across hundreds of products. Google often ignores repeated descriptions and shows a snippet of its own choosing, and searchers can't tell the products apart.
  • Keyword stuffing. Repeating a word three times wears out both readers and Google; once, in a natural sentence, is enough.
  • All caps, piles of emoji, strings of exclamation marks. They erode trust instead of drawing attention.
  • Claims you can't prove. Phrases like “the best” or “number one” carry no information for the reader.
  • Empty sentences that just repeat the product name. “Buy product X at a great price on the X page” tells nobody anything.

Writing meta descriptions for hundreds of products

Writing descriptions one by one is doable for twenty products, not for two thousand. At that point you have two options: build a template per product type and fill in the gaps by hand, or let AI write the first draft and review the result.

Benefity pulls your products straight from IdeaSoft, Shopify or ikas, and works with Excel on any other platform. Benefity AI writes each product's meta description using only the product information you provide; it never adds discounts, shipping or warranties you didn't give it. You see every draft with a Google preview and a character counter, and when you approve it, only the changed SEO fields are written to your store.

Frequently asked questions

Does the meta description affect rankings?
Not directly; Google states that it doesn't use the meta description as a ranking signal. Its effect is on clicks: a result that explains itself better gets clicked more.
How many characters should a meta description have?
140–160 characters is a good target. Google doesn't set a fixed limit and cuts the text according to its width on screen, so put the most important information in the first 120 characters.
Why isn't Google showing the description I wrote?
If Google thinks another passage on the page fits the search better, it shows that instead. A description that accurately summarizes the page and doesn't contradict it is more likely to be shown.
Does every product need its own meta description?
Yes. Pages with the same description can't be told apart in search results, and Google often ignores repeated descriptions.
