In short
- Broad searches like “men's running shoes” usually land on category pages, so they're the pages competing for your store's most-searched terms.
- Each category should match one search intent; don't create two categories that show the same products.
- Page title 50–60 characters, meta description 140–160; the category description 80–150 words in two short paragraphs.
- Don't change the slug of a live category, and check that filtered URLs point to the main category with a canonical tag.
In this guide
A product page describes one model; a category page covers all the options. That's why, for broad searches like “bamboo duvet cover set” or “women's trench coat”, Google usually shows a category page. In many ikas stores, category pages are just a product grid: the title is the bare category name and the description is empty. This guide walks through making those pages competitive for such searches.
Why category pages matter so much
- They answer broad searches. People search by product type before they search by name, and the answer to those searches is a category page.
- They're the hub of internal links. They're linked from every page through the menu, and the path to your products runs through them.
- They last. Products sell out and change, but a category address stays the same for years and builds strength over time.
Structure first: the right category tree
- Each category should match a single search intent. “Backpacks” and “Laptop bags” are different intents; “Bags 2” isn't an intent at all.
- Don't create two categories that show the same products. Two near-identical pages end up competing for the same search.
- Keep the tree to 2–3 levels. Visitors and Google should reach any product within a few clicks of the home page.
- Name categories the way customers search: “Women's sweatshirts”, not “Upper-body apparel”.
Category SEO fields in ikas
In ikas, every category has a page title, meta description, address (slug) and description, just like products. Here are the targets:
| Field | Target |
|---|---|
| Page title | 50–60 characters; category name + scope: “Men's Running Shoes: Road and Trail | Store Name” |
| Meta description | 140–160 characters; what's in the category and how to choose |
| Address (slug) | Short, lowercase: /mens-running-shoes. Don't change it once it's live. |
| Category description | 80–150 words in two short paragraphs; at least 60 words |
How to write a category description
Two short paragraphs are enough: the first says what's in the category, the second explains how to choose. The description shouldn't push products down the screen; whether it appears above or below the products depends on your ikas theme, so take a look at the page after publishing.
Weak
Running shoe models at the best prices are here. When buying running shoes, check out our running shoes category.
Strong
Women's and men's running shoes for road, trail and treadmill, from cushioned everyday trainers to lightweight racers. When choosing, think about the surface you'll run on and your weekly distance, and try your size in the evening with your running socks on.
Filters, sorting and pagination
Filter and sort options can produce dozens of URL variations of the same category (?color=black&sort=price). Those addresses shouldn't compete with the main category page in search results. Open the source of a filtered page and check that its rel="canonical" line points to the main category URL. With pagination (page 2, page 3), it's normal for each page to have its own address; what matters is that products can be reached through links on those pages.
Working in bulk: connect ikas to Benefity
Instead of writing titles and descriptions one by one for dozens of categories and hundreds of products, Benefity connects directly to your ikas store and Benefity AI writes the SEO fields and descriptions for categories and products.
- In the ikas admin, go to Uygulamalar → Uygulamalarım → Diğer → Özel Uygulama Oluştur (Apps → My apps → Other → Create private app).
- Select read and write access for Products and Categories and create the app.
- Paste the Client ID and Client Secret into Benefity; the connection is tested before it's saved.
- On the Categories tab, select your categories and write them with Benefity AI. Review the drafts and approve the ones you like.
Benefity sends only the SEO fields and description to ikas; the category's name, address and products stay exactly as they are. Benefity AI never invents product names for category descriptions. If categories can't be read through the connection, you can do the same job with Excel.
Frequently asked questions
- How many words should a category description be?
- 80–150 words is enough for most categories, and at least 60 is a good minimum. If a long text pushes products down, use a theme setting that places the description below the products.
- Which matters more: category pages or product pages?
- They answer different searches. Broad searches (“running shoes”) go to categories; searches for a specific model go to products. Starting with your handful of categories is an easy way to put your first effort into the most-searched pages.
- Can I write ikas blog posts with Benefity too?
- ikas blog posts can't be updated through the API yet, so the ikas connection works with products and categories. You can prepare blog SEO fields with Excel and copy them into ikas by hand.
