Shopify product page SEO checklist: 12 points
A 12-point SEO checklist for Shopify product pages: page title, meta description, URL handle, description, image alt text, variants and technical settings.

In short
- Every Shopify product has a Search engine listing section where you edit the page title, meta description and URL handle separately.
- Keep titles to 50–60 characters and meta descriptions to 140–160; product descriptions should be original and at least 120 words.
- Write alt text for images, set up colors and sizes as variants rather than separate products, and keep the redirect option on when you change a URL.
- Shopify has no meta keywords field, and Google doesn't use that tag for ranking anyway.
In this guide
Shopify handles a good share of technical SEO for you: it generates a sitemap, serves pages from fast infrastructure and most themes output the basic tags correctly. What's left is the content of each product page. The 12 points below cover everything to check, in order, before a product goes live.
Search engine listing
Click Edit in the Search engine listing section at the bottom of the product edit screen and three fields open up. If you leave them empty, Shopify uses the product title and the start of the description, which usually means text that's too long or cut off mid-sentence.
1. Page title
50–60 characters with the main keyword first: product type, distinguishing feature and the brand if there is one. Add your store name at the end if there's room. Shopify's counter allows longer text, but Google cuts long titles off.
2. Meta description
140–160 characters: what the product is, what sets it apart, the benefit to the customer and a short call to action. Details and examples are in the meta description guide.
3. URL handle
Choose a short, lowercase address that carries the main keyword: /products/ceramic-v60-brewing-set. If you change the handle of a live product, Shopify offers to create a redirect from the old address; leave that box ticked, or old links and the address in search results will lead to an empty page.
Page content
4. Product title
In most themes, the product title is shown as the page's main heading (H1). It's written for customers, so keep it clear, consistent and free of stock codes. If search needs a longer phrase, put it in the page title instead.
5. Product description
Instead of copying the supplier's text, write an original description: a short introduction, a list of 3–6 features and a closing paragraph. At least 120 words is a good minimum, and 150–250 is enough for most products. Only list features the product really has.
6. Image alt text
Click a product image, choose Add alt text and briefly describe what it shows: “White ceramic V60 dripper with glass server”. Alt text is read aloud for visually impaired visitors and helps Google Images understand the picture. Describe the image; don't list keywords.
7. Image files
Before uploading, give files meaningful names (ceramic-v60-set.jpg, not IMG_4821.jpg) and shrink unnecessarily large files. Shopify resizes images for each device, but a huge original can still slow down the first page load.
Structure and technical settings
8. Variants
Set up differences in color, size or capacity as variants of one product rather than as separate products. That way you don't end up with near-identical pages, and all of the product's signals collect at a single address.
9. Collections and internal links
Add the product to the relevant collections, and link to compatible products or a complementary collection in the description. Collection pages compete for broader searches; the category SEO guide applies to collections too.
10. Structured data
Most current Shopify themes add product structured data (price, availability, image) to product pages automatically. Paste a product URL into Google's Rich Results Test to check for errors, and repeat the check if you change themes.
11. Duplicate URLs and canonical tags
Shopify can open a product both at /products/… and under a collection path (/collections/…/products/…). The theme tells search engines the main address is /products/… with a canonical tag. Checking the rel="canonical" line in the page source once is enough.
12. Sitemap and Search Console
Shopify generates your sitemap automatically at /sitemap.xml. Add your store to Google Search Console and submit that address once; new products are added to the sitemap automatically after that.
Finish your whole catalog with Benefity
Writing the first three points and the description by hand for hundreds of products takes weeks. Benefity connects directly to your Shopify store and brings in products and collections; Benefity AI drafts the page title, meta description and description for each one.
- Enter your Shopify store address in Benefity and install the app on the Shopify screen that opens. You can also create your own app at dev.shopify.com and paste its keys instead.
- Select products or collections and write them with Benefity AI.
- Review the drafts with a Google preview and approve the ones you like. Approved fields are written to Shopify and re-read to verify them.
Only the SEO fields and description are sent to your store; prices, stock, variants and images are never touched. Blog posts' SEO titles, meta descriptions and excerpts can be written the same way.
Frequently asked questions
- Where do I change the SEO title in Shopify?
- Click Edit in the Search engine listing section at the bottom of the product edit screen. The page title, meta description and URL handle fields are there.
- Will changing a Shopify product URL hurt rankings?
- It's usually fine if a redirect is set up, and Shopify offers to create one when you change the handle. Still, don't change live URLs unless you need to.
- Should collection pages get SEO too?
- Yes. Collections compete for broad searches like “men's running shoes”. Give every collection its own page title, meta description and a short description.
