How a free shipping bar raises your average order value

A free shipping bar shows how far the cart is from the threshold as it changes. How to pick the threshold, write the messages and add one to IdeaSoft.

In short

  • A free shipping bar shows visitors how far they are from the threshold as their cart changes: “You're ₺85 away from free shipping.”
  • A visitor who is close to the threshold may choose to add one more item rather than pay for shipping, and that's what raises the order value.
  • It works best when the threshold sits a little above your average order value and can be reached with complementary products.
  • Benefity's free shipping bar reads the IdeaSoft cart directly and is added with a single line of code, no coding required.

Most stores have a free shipping threshold, but visitors often only find out about it at checkout, the moment they see the shipping fee. Going back to add something at that point is a hassle. A free shipping bar makes the threshold visible from the start of the visit and updates the remaining amount as the cart changes.

Why it works

  • The goal becomes concrete. Instead of a “free shipping over ₺750” note at the bottom of the page, each visitor sees their own remaining amount.
  • The choice gets easier. A visitor close to the threshold weighs paying the shipping fee against adding an item for a similar amount, and the item often feels like better value.
  • The reward is instant. When the threshold is passed, the bar says “Congrats, your shipping is free!” and no surprise fee is left for checkout.

How to pick the threshold

A threshold works best when it sits a little above your average order value: it looks reachable for most customers but takes one more item to hit. Set it too low and you hand out free shipping on orders that were coming anyway; set it too high and nobody bothers trying to reach it.

  1. Find your average order value for the last few months in your platform's sales reports.
  2. Factor in shipping costs and your margins: the threshold has to cover the cost of free shipping.
  3. Set the threshold a little above the average and make sure you have complementary products priced to close the gap.
  4. After a few weeks, compare your average order value and number of orders with the period before.

Good messages cover three states

The bar shows a different message for each state of the cart. Keep it short, put the amount front and center and congratulate the shopper once they pass the threshold.

StateExample message
Empty cartFree shipping on orders of {limit} or more
Below the thresholdYou're {kalan} away from free shipping
Threshold reachedCongrats, your shipping is free!

Benefity supports three placeholders in the messages: {kalan} is the amount left to the threshold, {limit} is the threshold itself and {sepet} is the cart total. If you leave a state's message empty, the bar doesn't appear in that state; for example, delete the empty-cart message to show the bar only once there's something in the cart. You can turn the progress bar on or off and match the accent color to your store.

Where and when to show it

  • Cart page: where the remaining amount matters most. The bar shows on the cart page and stays out of the checkout steps.
  • Product pages: visitors see the threshold before adding a product.
  • Device: the bar works on mobile too, and you can limit it to desktop or mobile only.

When it appears (right away, after a few seconds, on scroll), how often (every page, once per visit, once a day) and on which pages (all, home, product, category, cart or a specific URL) are all set in the widget settings.

Setting it up on IdeaSoft without code

  1. Open the Widget Studio in Benefity and choose the Free shipping bar template.
  2. Enter the threshold in TL, then adjust the messages, colors and the pages it appears on.
  3. Add the one-line code once in the IdeaSoft admin under Ayarlar → Genel Ayarlar → Özel Script Kodları (Settings → General Settings → Custom Script Codes). Once the code is running, the panel shows it as verified.
  4. Publish. You won't need to add the code again for future widgets.

The bar reads the IdeaSoft cart directly, using the same amount as IdeaSoft's own free shipping calculation: the cart total after discounts, with VAT included. It updates without a page reload as items are added or removed, and it picks up changes made in another tab too. The code loads without holding up the rest of the page; if something goes wrong, the bar simply doesn't appear and the page keeps working.

Measure the result

Measure the effect with your own data, not someone else's numbers. Compare average order value and number of orders for a few weeks before and after publishing the bar. Keep other factors such as campaigns, sale days or seasons separate, and restart the measurement if you change the threshold.

Frequently asked questions

Which platforms does the free shipping bar work on?
Only IdeaSoft for now, because the bar reads the cart directly from IdeaSoft. Other widgets work on any site with a single line of code.
Is the remaining amount still right when a discount code is used?
Yes. The bar reads the same amount IdeaSoft's own free shipping calculation uses: the cart total after discounts, with VAT included.
Will the bar slow down my site?
It won't hold your page up: the code is a single small file that loads without blocking the rest of the page. If something goes wrong, the bar simply doesn't appear and your page keeps working.
Can I use it on the Free plan?
Yes. The Free plan includes 1 live widget and 5,000 views a month, and the free shipping bar can be that widget.
